Fun for the entire family!

It's hard to believe we're closing in on the 10 year anniversary of Grapplefest 1. The idea for Grapplefest came about somewhere back in '06 or '07 when my sons and I were driving back from some $100 single elimination tournament. It was probably our 9th or 10th road trip to compete, usually Vegas, LA or Denver, and this time everyone lost their first match; one and done, thanks for coming. This was expensive for a bugman (I work in trades), and it was rare to see other New Mexicans at these events.

On the way home after that tournament we got to talking and decided to look into organizing a tournament ourselves but making decisions from the standpoint of a competitor or parent of a competitor. With a ton of hard work and passion Grapplefest was born, and It has been a matter of pride for us to put people before profits.

For a decade we charged half of what nearly every other single elimination tournament charges. However, we now our faced with the need for our first, and probably last, price increase, in a decade.

The increase is needed for a few understandable reasons. First, the Rio Rancho School District has revamped their entire pay structure and procedures. This will increase our already expensive venue costs about $2000 per event. Secondly, we will now be using Strongvon for registration and bracketing. This will come with many competitor friendly features that are well worth the investment. The Elite division that debuted in 2015 has grown significantly and so too will the prize money! Most of our staffers and referees have been with us since the beginning and have improved at their particular jobs and deserve raises. We're also shopping for newer, better medals, and other awards for the Team Challenge.

The best parts of running the tournaments for me is that it is a family activity, my wife, children, in-laws and many close friends form the staff nucleus and have bonded through running these events. Also, the tournaments have allowed us to meet many wonderful new friends. Martial artists are great people and jiu-jiteiros are amongst the best.

Please take the time to carefully read and understand the new registration procedures. A lot has changed that will make the tournaments run smoother, however there will be little to no wiggle room for folks who register incorrectly, show up late, miss weight, etc.
